Video format is very important for social media and online marketing. The format that you use can affect your video in various ways, making it more important than you may realize.

Overall there are several reasons why choosing the right video format is important for online videos, depending on where and how you intend to publish them, as some platforms only support specific formats of video.

LinkedIn

The best video format for LinkedIn is landscape (16:9). The recommended optimal video length here is 30 seconds but their maximum length allows you to upload a 10-minute video. Although people use it for job listings and career information, long-form video works wonders for corporate groups and company updates. On Twitter, the best video format is landscape (16:9). Their recommended optimal video length is 43-45 seconds, which is generally news clips or information on what's going on in the world. The video format for Facebook is landscape (16:9) and square (1:1). Facebook Stories also uses portrait (9:16), which you can directly post via your Instagram. The recommended optimal video length is 15 seconds to 3 minutes, as companies use this platform mostly for promoting their products - and this is because there are a wide range of consumers. However, the maximum video length is a whopping 240 minutes, which isn’t recommended as consumers would get bored easily and not watch the entire length of your video, meaning they wouldn't see your entire message.

The best format for websites is landscape (16:9) and (4:3) which work well on desktop, as well as when it’s being projected for presentations. Think about the last conference you attended - remember that big screen? It needs to show your story in full, without too much empty space. The best format for Instagram posts is square (1:1) but for Instagram Stories portrait (9:16) would be the better option. The recommended optimal Instagram video length for a story is 15 seconds, for a grid video 60 seconds or less would be best, and 2-5 mins works best for IGTV. This last option has been proven successful by make-up artists giving tutorials, small business owners or artists promoting new songs. It is possible to post longer videos on IGTV where the maximum length is 10 minutes, however, it isn’t recommended as viewers would begin to lose interest if the videos are too long.
